Probation is a form of punishment wherein the offender is placed back in society under the supervision of the court. Often, a sentence will include a long period of probation, but little or no time in jail. Probation requires the convicted person to comply with certain requirements as a condition of being released back into society. Failure to perform what the court has asked can result in a revocation of probation.
Examples of Probation terms include, but are not limited to: attending an alcohol education course for a Drunk Driving (DUI) conviction; completing an anger management course for a domestic violence conviction; or registering with the local police as a sex offender. Other things, such as paying fines or fees, completing any time in jail and obeying all laws, are often very common.
If one who has been placed on probation is accused of violating that probation, the judge could sentence the person to the full amount of time in jail for the original offense. That is why a Probation Revocation hearing can be more serious than outcome of the original offense. Hiring the right kind of lawyer to handle this matter can make all the difference in the world. If you have been charged with violating your probation, you need to talk to a lawyer now.
