Murder
Murder is the most serious offense in the criminal justice system. It is not uncommon for the punishment for murder, or attempted murder, to be at least ten years or more. It is also the only offense which can earn a person the extreme penalty of death.
Murder, in its purest form, is the intentional killing of another person. If a person is killed, and it was done on purpose, then Murder is the resulting charge. Further, a person can be charged with Murder for intending to kill one person, yet killing another.
There are other forms of murder which do not follow the rule of requiring the intention to kill. For instance, felony-murder is one such form of murder. Under the California felony-murder rule, if one has the intent to do certain crimes that are inherently dangerous, then one can be held responsible for Murder if a person dies as a result of that action.
Robbery is an example of felony-murder. If, while robbing another person, the gun accidentally goes off, then the robber can be charged with murder. In fact, the robber can even receive the death penalty.
California is one of the states which still has the Death Penalty. In fact, California has approximately 700 inmates on death row. Los Angeles County has sentenced more people to die than any other County in California.
What this all means is that being charged with a Death-eligible murder in the Los Angeles Courts is not a situation to be taken lightly.
