In this modern era, domestic violence is pursued by the State aggressively. Unlike most other violent crimes, spousal battery, also known as partner abuse or domestic abuse, has its own set of rules. California has enacted legislation that provides for special penalties for a person convicted of a domestic violence crime as opposed to other violent crimes.  These include mandatory counseling and some mandatory restraints on personal freedom.  Furthermore, the Court has little authority to not enforce these provisions.
